Description

Originally founded as a Cistercian abbey in the 13th century, Buckland Abbey has a rich and fascinating history. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a private home by Sir Richard Grenville, a famous Elizabethan sea captain. And it was here that the celebrated explorer Sir Francis Drake spent his later years.

As you make your way to the abbey, you'll be struck by the serene beauty of the surrounding countryside. Located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, the abbey is surrounded by rolling hills, tranquil streams, and lush greenery. It's hard not to feel a sense of peace and tranquility as you approach the abbey's imposing stone walls.

Once inside, you'll be able to explore the abbey's many treasures at your own pace. The Great Hall, with its impressive wooden ceiling and grand fireplace, is a stunning example of medieval architecture. The abbey's chapel, with its beautiful stained glass windows and ornate furnishings, is a testament to the faith that inspired its creation.

One of the highlights of any visit to Buckland Abbey is the chance to explore the gardens and grounds. The abbey's extensive gardens are a delight for nature lovers, with a wide variety of plants, flowers, and trees to admire. And the surrounding parkland is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic on a sunny day.

For history buffs, there are plenty of fascinating artefacts to discover at Buckland Abbey. The Drake Chamber, which was once Sir Francis Drake's private quarters, is filled with mementos of his adventurous life, including maps, navigational instruments, and even a piece of wood from his ship, the Golden Hind.
